The History of Pecans

The name “Pecan” came from the Native American word “Algonquin” meaning “all nuts requiring a stone to crack”. Fits some early pecan varieties perfectly! Native American tribes thrived on pecans and used various pecan growing locations as their headquarters because pecans were their food source for the entire autumn season.

During colonial times the marketing of pecans really took off. New Orleans began planting pecan orchards and experimenting with propagation techniques to send pecans to mass markets. Soon after, New Orleans became a central workoutplace.net hub for distributing pecans because of its location at the base of the Mississippi River. During the 1800 to 1900’s businesses really began seeing the opportunities in the pecan industry and started producing different varieties of pecans.

We can see the following names of the varieties trace back to the Native American roots of pecans like Cheyenne (one of the highest quality grown), Pawnee,  Desirable, Choctaw and Wichita.
